Samenvatting

Besproken in AQC, jrg.103 (1990), 1991, pp.243,244:
“Bro. Roberts is regarded in the United States as the foremost masonic author of today, but in this country he is not so well-known as he deserves to be. He has more than twenty-five books to his credit and twelve motion pictures about Freemasonry that have gained international awards. Amongst other qualifications he is a Fellow, a Past President and the Executive Secretary of the Philalethes Society of America, which is devoted to masonic research…The book is divided into four sections: Philosophy and Opinion; History and Opinion; Biography; Fiction/Drama. The first of these and — to a lesser extent — the other parts contain papers and articles which were written at various times…The second part includes stories of brotherly actions during the American Civil War…It is unfortunate that here, and elsewhere in the book, Bro. Roberts does not draw a distinct line between speculative and operative Masonry. The Regulations of the London Masons’ Gild in 1356 prove that operative Masonry then existed; they offer no similar evidence of Freemasonry, nor is there ‘..a continuation of the Craft, at least since 1356’…Part three of the book contains biographies : those of seven American freemasons include that of the late Alphonse Cerza, who was elected to membership of our lodge in 1983…The fourth section contains fictitious stories of the American Civil War and two amusing plays about ‘the Lodge of Confusion’. Although differing from the author on some points, I find myself in agreement with Bro. Richard E. Fletcher’s introduction: … ‘there is indeed much to learn within these pages.’”
